Behind the lens

I am an experienced photographer cutting my teeth on film many years ago. During this time I started to build a darkroom, however, thank goodness it never materialised. I don’t think I would have been quite so keen with the long darkroom process. Eventually due to the raising of two children, family and work commitments the darkroom and camera took a large backward step.

Being somewhat of a computer geek since the mid 90’s I was soon keeping a watchful eye on digital cameras and the technology developing within this sphere. Then suddenly a good friend of mine brought over from Australia a 2mp compact (not so compact) during a trip here in 1996. I was almost hooked from then, but managed to keep my money in my pocket until Canon (my preferred make from older days) had brought out a decent alternative or at least a good comparison to film.

The expense started then and continues today, I still await to see technology every year. Digital imaging software has also come on in leaps and bounds and in my view, is vastly better than any darkroom process.

Today I am using very high end Canon specification cameras and equally professional Canon ‘L’ series lenses.

Well in this ever changing world of electronics, this above statement is now quite dated!

I now use only Sony Mirrorless cameras and lenses.

See equipment in my camera bag below.

So from 2mp through to over 50mp full frame cameras, the quality is now as good as it can be. For general printing and electronic media reproduction there are no requirements for any finer detail........RIP film!

However it is not just the equipment, anyone can own a top end camera but can they consistently produce the goods?

I'd like to think I have been blessed with a small streak of artistic flair, I can probably thank my mother for this, having been a very successful watercolor painter and illustrator for most of her life.

I also permanently see the world through the eyes of a viewfinder, everything is a potential picture. Luckily though, I do plan most of my shots.

My gambit covers most elements of photography: Travel, Commercial, Editorial, Landscape, and Studio.

I have access to professional studio’s for: Fashion, Portrait, Family, Bump to Birth, even artistic Nudes. I also have my own studio lights and equipment allowing me to ‘go on location’ anywhere.

I am a member of the Royal Photgraphic Society and the Society of Professional Image Makers, links can be found on their site from here.

Around 6 years ago I qualified to be a judge throughout the Western Counties Photographic Federation. I have been using this undertaking to judge camera club competitions within our area. (See testimonials from camera clubs) Please note at the moment I am taking a sabbatical.

I have won many competitions, whether it be Devon based or Internationally.

I have had one print selected by the Royal Photographic Society, one of their most prodigious international competitions which was premiered in London then later in the year travelled the UK.

High quality published work and specific commissions have been undertaken over the past years with a strong emphasis to clearly defined editorial needs...

Update September 2018.

Over the last 4 to 5 years as mentioned before I have experimented with the Sony mirrorless camera's. However after having my Sony A7r11 completely fail whist in Barbados, I chose to stick and revert back to my favoured Canon equipment.

However this update brings a new era.

After listening to a Sony ambassador and along with London Camera Exchange offering 10% discount on Sony products, I've jumped ship and bought £9500 of their equipment and part exchanged all my Canon gear.
